Evaluation of X-ray table mattresses for radiation attenuation and impact on image quality

AbstractIntroduction Mattresses in the radiology department tend to be an overlooked aspect of imaging equipment. This paper evaluates radiation attenuation characteristics mattresses and effect they have on image quality. Methods Thirteen (from new 20 years age) were evaluated. Incident air kerma (IAK) was measured two conditions, with without mattress over a range exposure factors using digital dosimeter. Image quality assessed by calculating inverse factor (IQFinv) commercially available phantom (CDRAD) for same factors. The correlation age calculated. Results Measured IAK affected addition older having greater attenuation; there is moderate/large (0.38–0.51) between IAK. IQFinv deteriorated but no (?0.41 0.16). Clinically, impact any study as changes account are smaller than increments mAs X-ray Conclusion results indicate that while presence does transmitted image, clinical insignificant.
